How does Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze play?
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a game that everyone will enjoy. It stays loyal to the series whilst making a few adjustments for new and younger players.
I started playing on original mode using the pro controller. Donkey Kong was a joy to control.
Bouncing, swinging and smashing his way through each level is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The amount of danger and associated peril present in the design of each level was enough to bring a challenge too. Whilst, at the same time, not cause lots of deaths and frustration.
It’s not a walk over, there will be a few deaths and the need to learn from makes. That’s what brings the fun of progression and learning how each character plays.
In co-operative mode having a friend along doubles the fun. A second player can choose to play as one of the DK crew and help out the main character. I really enjoyed the whole co-operative element and had some great moments during play.
A second player can either use a pro controller or share one of the 2 supplied Joy-cons to join in the fun. Co-op can also be played in handheld / undocked / table top. This brings co-operative 2 player to new places like journeys on the train, a friends house or whilst enjoying a coffee in cafe.
Presentation and Graphics
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has charming gorgeous cartoon style HD quality graphics. it also runs at a very stable 1080p with 60 frames per second when docked on your TV.
When Switching to undocked handheld mode quality drops to 720p, but the graphics still look amazing on the smaller screen.
Background music is cross between funk and jazz and really complements the gameplay. The menu screens are simple and intuitive to use suiting the younger audience.
Everything about the way Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is presented is a delight. It’s a shining example of a successful game franchise brought to Nintendo’s latest console.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has a solid story game mode. Donkey Kong and his friends and family are all enjoying the tropical island paradise. Invaders called the Snowmads from the artic take over DK island and turn it into an ice age fortress.
It is the job of Donkey Kong and the DK crew to save the day. There are 6 different worlds
There are 2 game modes for the story. ‘Original mode’ brings a more classic look and feel to the game that players will recognise from the series. In this mode you play as Donkey Kong.
The second mode is ‘Funky mode’ where you play a surfer dude called Funky Kong who’s the owner of the local surf store ‘ Fly and Buy’. Playing as Funky Kong allows the use of the surfboard to hover, slide and prevent damage from ground spikes.
He also gets swimming unlimited underwater and a discount when buying items at his store. Having more hearts makes him more suited to new and younger gamers allowing more accessibility to fun!
Both modes allow the assistance of sidekicks as a AI controlled assistant or as a second player in a co-operative sense. Each side kick has a slightly different set of abilities. Diddy and Dixie Kong have the ability to hover and shoot with their gun.
Cranky Kong can pogo stick around and avoid damage from ground spikes by using his walking stick. He can remove his dentures and throw them at enemies, ugh!
Whilst playing each level there are fun sub goals to achieve. You can try and collect all the letters of K-O-N-G which will unlock the hard mode of the game.
There are hidden levels to find and bananas to collect and gold coins or currency. On completion of each level you can access the ‘Time Attack’ mode to allow create competition between friends. Run times are shared online via leaderboards.
Should You play Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze ?
Yes, this addition of Donkey Kong is great way to enjoy and share a co-operative platform action experience. There’s lots of things to find, unlock, level up and each character changes the experience slightly to extend the replay value.
The whole package is one of high quality, the story is on par with a movie. The game play is exceptional. There’s funk, soul and bananas!
