Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age – (Official site)

July 2017 Video game releases FFXII Image

Release Date: 11th July, 2017
Formats available: PS4
Developer & Publisher: Square Enix
Genre: JRPG

What’s it about?

Natalie: Unpopular opinion: FF12 is one of my favourite Final Fantasy games. Having played through it countless times back on my PS2, I’m really excited to be able to play it again. Plus, it comes with remastered graphics, with an overhauled battle system. What more could a Final Fanasy fan want?

The Zodiac Job system sounds a lot more interesting than what it was in the original game. This time it lets you choose a specific class to play, rather than having one big license board with all the weapons. The story is very political, and revolves around a war between the kingdoms of Archadia and Nabradia. Soon Dalmasca is dragged into the conflict.

The characters all have their own motivations for their journey, which makes them all interesting. Apart from Vaan, it can be argued, as there have been many debates as to his importance in the story at all. This doesn’t detract from the fact that this is an amazing game which I can’t wait to experience again.

Anybody who knows me also knows that I am infatuated with Fran. Ever since the day I first saw her, so that’s another reason I’m excited to play this again!

Why Natalie And David are interested…

David: Following on from an accident some time ago I was left with some memory loss. Including how I got the memory loss… seriously! So because of this, Final Fantasy XII is a game I know I’ve played but don’t know a damn thing about.

I’m curious about the Gambit system but outside of that specific reason, I’m on a mission to re-experience Final Fantasy games and Square seem to be making that a reality for me without too much effort on my part.

Natalie: Final Fantasy 12 hold a special place in my heart. Returning to Ivalice with prettier graphics and a much bigger TV than what I had before is something that makes me a very happy gamer indeed.

Splatoon 2 – (Official Site)

July 2017 Video Game Releases Splatoon 2 image

Release Date: 21st July, 2017
Formats available: Switch
Developer & Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Third-Person Shooter

What’s it about?

Natalie: Splatoon is one of those games that grabs you right from the start. You’re an inkling in a turf war and the aim is to cover as much of the arena in the paint of your teams colour as possible. There is also a story mode like the first, only this time it revolves around the disappearance of one of the squid sisters, Callie. It seems you will be ‘hired’ by Marie to find her, or what happened to her.

This game is one of those rare games that can literally be enjoyed by anyone, from toddlers to the elderly. Nintendo got this series so right and it’s such a joy to play. The music is catchy, the colours are explosive (you see what I did there?) and the gameplay is ridiculously addictive.

Why Natalie And David are interested…

Natalie: The original Splatoon was crazy fun, and now with Splatoon 2 being able to play it on a big screen or small. Take it on the go or just to the bathroom to do your business will mean that I never see the light of day again.

Really looking forward to this one!

David: I want to cover the world in paint-like ink and squids. This game aligns with my personal goals. Also, I really need something to play on the Switch.

Fortnite – (Official Site)

July 2017 Video Game Releases Fortnite Image

Release Date: 25 July, 2017
Formats available: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Developer & Publisher: Epic Games, People Can Fly
Genre: Survival

What’s it about?

Natalie: Fortnite is one of those games where you see it and think “what the hell is that…? I must play it!”. By day you explore and scavenge your deserted surroundings for anything you can find and make weapons and huge strongholds. By night you defend said stronghold and yourself from swarms of zombie enemies, to survive the night at do it all again for 14 in-game days (hence fortnite).

Defending your stronghold includes the crafting and placing of traps, which looks really fun, as you can do whatever you want with them. It’s possible to combine them to make ultra death traps of doom too. There are a ridiculous amount of characters, or heroes as they’re called, to be and each are a different class with their own abilities to help you survive the night.

The world is a randomly generated sandbox, so you can’t get familiar and know where to get all the best stuff which makes it interesting. Plus the co-op element means you can play with your friends and all get brutally murdered by zombies together! Sounds like fun, right?

Why I’m interested…

Horde modes are always fun, but adding an exploration aspect where you need to scavenge for things to make a stronghold to defend against hordes sounds even better, and I will be playing the heck out of this when it comes out!

Rossco’s Incredible-Indie Games for July 2017

David and Natalie between them have looked at the big games out this month. I’ve been looking at the Indie Game collection from smaller studios.

Here’s what I like the looks of this month from the indie market…

Serial Cleaner – (Official Site)

July 2017 Video game releases Serial Cleaner image

Release Date: 11 July, 2017(PS4 only, Other formats 14 July, 2017)
Formats available: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Developer & Publisher: iFun4All, Curve Digital
Genre: Stealth-Action

What’s it about?

This top down action game is a bit stealth, bit action based and nicely fun looking. You are the person responsible for tidying up the evidence of a crime, without getting caught. It seems a challenge but a rewarding one.

Here are some details from the developer.

“Set in the 1970s, Serial Cleaner has players sneak around bloody crime scenes to clean up incriminating evidence by disposing of bodies, covering up bloodstains and hiding murder weapons all while avoiding the police. To succeed players must explore, experiment and make swift decisions in order to avoid police detection. Get caught and players earn a black mark on their protagonist’s career.

In Serial Cleaner players can partake in Story Mode where they will play a 20-level campaign to discover the Cleaner’s backstory and discover a crazy cast of characters, including his mother. Players can also test their skills in Challenge Mode, which has players compete in a bevy of nail-bitingly hard modes such as Drunk Mode and a mode where they won’t be able to see an enemy’s vision cones.”

Why I’m interested…

I like top down action games, I was a big fan of Hotline Miami 2 and it’s got that same dark, but dun vibe to it. There seem to be a number of challenges to this game and I’m liking the original take on this gene. For the price (£11.99 or less), it’s going to be a good challenge and a bit of fun.

Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles – (Official Site)

July 2017 Video Game releases Yonder Image

Release Date: 18 July, 2017
Formats available: PC, PS4
Developer & Publisher: Prideful Sloth
Genre: Open World Adventure

What’s it about?

This is more of a large scale game, where you are taking in the sites of this beautiful open-world as you explore the island of Gemea. It’s very exploration and adventure focused with a relaxing look to it.

Some official info for you.

“Yonder is set on the massive island of Gemea, a lush frontier with eight distinct environments ranging from sunny tropical beaches to frigid snow-capped summits. Each location has its own flora and fauna, along with changing seasons and a day-night cycle.  Gemea, once a paradise, still maintains the appearance of one, yet an evil murk has enshrouded the land and its people in despair.

By contributing to the island through talents like farming, crafting, cooking, fishing and brewing, relationships can be built with the locals, who offer everything from resources to a new farm as rewards.

At the heart of Yonder, is a game that delivers a sense of discovery, wrapped in a familiar yet unique adventure.”

Why I’m interested…

I like adventure games, there is something about a slower paced game at times that stands out. Particularly in the market now where it’s all very action focused. The game looks really striking and one I want to lose myself in for a few hours. One to watch this, it could be a cult classic. My concern is over the open world “bug” factor but hopefully the developers avoid any pitfalls here.

Pyre – (Official Site)

July 2017 Video Game releases PYRE image

Release Date: 25 July, 2017
Formats available: PC, PS4
Developer & Publisher: Supergiant Games
Genre: Action RPG

What’s it about?

Two cool developers have come together to make a multiplayer ARPG that looks very interesting. The gameplay was shown some time ago now but I’ve been keeping an eye on this one. The magic and action between parties in battle look very addicitice and strategic and could make for some great matches.

Some info from the developers:

“Pyre is a party-based RPG from the team that brought you Bastion and Transistor! This time, we’ve created a party-based RPG in which you lead a band of exiles to freedom through ancient competitions spread across a vast, mystical purgatory.

Who shall return to glory, and who shall remain in exile to the end of their days? Find out in our biggest-ever single-player Campaign, or challenge a friend to a fast-paced ritual showdown in Versus Mode.”

Why I’m interested…

It looks like a highly addictive title to me, one hard to stop once you get going. There are some unique qualities about the battle system and it all should be of good quality given the development teams at Bastion and Transistor are behind this.

Aven Colony – (Official Site)

July 2017 Video game releases Aven Colony Image

Release Date: 25 July, 2017
Formats available: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Developer & Publisher: Mothership Entertainment, Team 17
Genre: Building SIM

What’s it about?

When I saw this game I immediately Announced the news.  I get massively into building games, I love classic city builders and newer games like Cities Skylines  so this is one for me. I like the fact they are making good console UI’s for these games now as more than PC gamers enjoy them.

Here is an overview of the game from the development team.

“Set on Aven Prime, an alien world of deserts, tundras and wetlands light-years from Earth, Aven Colony is a rich simulation of an extra-terrestrial colony. Build, customise and maintain your settlement, manage your resources, encounter a variety of alien life forms and look after your citizens – all while dealing with the challenges of life in an entirely new solar system.

Will your plucky settlers survive and prosper on this exotic alien world, and uncover its many secrets?

Featuring a dedicated mission objective system which gradually introduces colony management during the campaign mode, Aven Colony welcomes and enables both novice and experienced players alike to acclimatise to life on Aven Prime. Advance from Colony Governor through the ranks to achieve the prestigious title of Expedition President. There’s also an in-depth sandbox mode with a variety of unique maps to choose from and a full suite of options to customize the game experience.”

Why I’m interested…

It’s a builder and it’s sci-fi, this is a geeky guy or gal’s dream if you are into that. I can’t wait to get going with it and lose hours of my life building a colony!
