Format(s): Nintendo Switch
Release Date: February 1
By: Finji

We kick off with the first Nintendo Switch version of an indie title many gamers already love. This is Night in the Woods from Finji and its a really well designed, quirky platform game that’s really worthy of joining the Switch family of indies.

If you’ve never played this one, its one of those to really think about this month if you own a Switch.

Night in the Woods Information

College dropout Mae Borowski returns home to the crumbling former mining town of Possum Springs seeking to resume her aimless former life and reconnect with the friends she left behind. But things aren’t the same. Home seems different now and her friends have grown and changed. Leaves are falling and the wind is growing colder. Strange things are happening as the light fades.

And there’s something in the woods.

Join Mae on a trip through her hometown and into the dark on the other side.

By: Imageform Games

And here is the second Switch port, one for those people who (like me) refuse to play a sequel without playing the original. Steamworld Dig 2 is out now but if you want to play the first one on your Nintendo Switch, now you can.

It’s an action packed, Metroidvania style game where you can explore around the environments. It’s had a lot of positive reviews and would make a nice addition to your indie games this February.

Steamworld Dig Information

February Indie games releases 2018 Steamworld Dig Image

SteamWorld Dig is a platform mining adventure with strong Metroidvanian influences. Take the role of Rusty, a lone mining steambot, as he arrives at an old mining town in great need. Dig your way through the old earth, gaining riches while uncovering the ancient threat that lurks below…

Key Features

  • A rich world of steam-driven robots, inspired by Steampunk and Western themes.
  • Explore an underground world full of secretstreasure and terrors.
  • Uncover the remnants of human civilization, a degenerate race of dynamite-wielding troglodytes.
  • Randomized worlds with emergent gameplay.

We are going old school in Mercenary Kings in this action shooter 2D, 16bit style. It looks like your classic retro shooter and any old school gamers out there will love a bit of that. Given its coming to all formats too, it’s going to be easy to get your hands on it.

There are cool characters, guns and lots of things going boom. What’s not to like?

Mercenary Kings Information

In this frantic 2D action game, you are part of the Mercenary Kings, the most skilled team of warriors-for-hire on Earth, but when your comrades have fallen and the fearsome forces of CLAW have seized an island-wide top secret Laboratory Base, you must do what it takes to stop them.

But you’re not going in unprepared! Your back-up is made of a crew of rogue geniuses and experts of their field! Able to craft & customize guns’n’blades or upgrading body armour, you’ve never been this ready to join the fight.

Whether it’s solo or with friends, move out, cut down CLAW and save the world!

Release Date: February 8
By: Team Junkfish

We have met the Scottish developer Team Junkfish a few times over the years (never understood what they said of course!) and this is their latest title to come to PC this month. It’s got a little humour about it too as we mix up the formula on Alien invasions. We are the awful invaders… a more believable reality if you ask me!

There is some dark comedy to enjoy in this one and some classic isometric graphics and turn based fighting too. All looking pretty interesting!

Attack of the Earthlings Information

February Indie games releases 2018 Attack of the Earthlings image

In Attack of the Earthlings, the humans behind Galactoil – a comically dysfunctional interstellar energy corporation – have travelled light years to Planet X13 and parked a gigantic space-drill to mine for fossil fuel reserves, sip the odd margarita in the sun and hunt big bugs.

However, their latest foray into energy exploration has landed them in a bit of a pickle; they’ve unwittingly flattened a native species home and now the surviving “Swarmers” are out for blood.

Combining turn-based combat and stealth in a dark comedic single player campaign influenced by the comic stylings of “The IT Crowd” and “Father Ted”, players take control of the “Swarmers”, a highly aggressive insectoid species, who must convert human flesh into alien muscle, evolve their units and even find the time to Gatecrash a birthday party as they put a stop to the Earthlings’ interplanetary assault.

I think the title here is trying to tell us this is a very story driven, point and click thing…? Or maybe not! ATOMIK RunGunJumpGun is coming to Nintendo Switch and it’s bringing lots of running, gunning, jumping and… more gunning.

Another nice retro entry into the list for a game already out on Steam For PC but now coming to Nintendo Switch. The PC version has some great reviews so it could be worth checking out.

ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun Information

February Indie games releases 2018 Atomik image

ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun is a tough as nails 2D action platformer that puts a teeth-rattling, gravity-defying weapon in your hands. With a cast of crazed characters, simple but beautifully difficult gameplay, and a pulsing musical score, ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun is a loud, trippy mess of twitchy platforming goodness.

The two-button setup is disarmingly simple. One button shoots downwards, propelling you through the air. The other shoots forward, destroying anything that’s in your path.

There is no stopping in this beautifully surreal world littered with deadly traps and soul-crushing obstacles around every corner.

Players will have to constantly alternate between the two firing modes to manoeuver through meticulously crafted levels where death is a promise not a possibility. There is only running, gunning, jumping, and gunning, in a mad dash to survive long enough to die again.

By: Over The Moon

There is a new entry into The Fall games, the original from Over The Moon Studios has some very good feedback on Steam and this sequel is going to add more to this sci-fi adventure.

This one is another metroidvania style 2D game that plays on some classic science fiction themes and AI. Maybe play the original first, but this looks great.

The Fall 2: Unbound Information

February Indie games releases 2018 The Fall 2 image

The Fall Part 2: Unbound is a hybrid of haunting metroidvania exploration merged with brain teasing point-and-click adventure puzzles and a healthy dose of chilling hard sci-fi. This sequel picks up right where its predecessor left off as we follow the exploits of A.R.I.D., a rogue AI who’s rewritten its protocol to follow one rule: “save myself”.

The new parameters of A.R.I.D.’s programming have allowed her the ability to possess new hosts including a posh, reality-divorced Butler, a sexy service Companion and a mysterious combat drone, known as “One”.

By: Dpad Studio

Another well received indie game available already on Steam that’s coming to console. This time Dpad Studio are bringing Owlboy to PS4. Xbox One and Nintendo Switch this month and it looks perfect for console gaming.

Owlboy has already won a number of indie game awards and you can see why from the gameplay. A beautiful world mixed with dungeons and bosses makes this a really good package for an indie title. Certainly one to watch guys.

By: The Station

Some developers from larger studios have got together to make an adventure title set on a space station. They have called this The Station, and also the developers are called The Station too. You can certainly see a theme with all this!

The game itself though looks really cool as you will be exploring and finding out the mystery of this space station. One for those who like the slower, more thoughtful adventure games out there but one fans of that style will love.

The Station Information

February Indie games releases 2018 the station image

The Station game is a first-person narrative mystery set on a space station sent to study a sentient alien civilization.

How would you react if we discovered a sentient alien civilization, challenging everything we know about biology, chemistry, physics, religion and answering the questions man has asked throughout history?

But what if this sentient alien civilization was discovered in a state of civil war?

Determining that the rewards outweigh the risks, an undetectable space station with a small three-person crew deploys to research the alien culture in search of a means towards a peaceful relationship.

Unable to contact the crew, a recon specialist is sent to uncover what happened. What players discover will challenge their view of surveillance, imperialism and moral law.

Rad Rodgers set to come to PS4 and Xbox One this month too and once again we are getting lots of 2D action to enjoy. This one follows that clasic idea of getting sucked into a video game yourself. I mentioned this in my video to go with this article but could not remember the cartoon Captain N: The Game Master from being a kid! Thank you Wikipedia and Google.

Here we have a bit of humour mixed in with some great looking action fun in this one. One I’ll personally be taking an interest in.

Rad Rodgers Information

February Indie games releases 2018 Rad Rodgers

Rad is a rambunctious but spirited young boy who maybe plays too many video games. After dozing off at the tail end of a long night of gaming, Rad awakens to find his dusty old console has turned itself back on. Suddenly a vortex emerges and he’s sucked into his TV, where he finds himself the star in his very own video game adventure.

Dusty is Rad’s good-hearted but foul-mouthed, now-sentient game console. His clock speed isn’t what it used to be. But what he lacks for in megahertz he makes up for with experience and attitude!

Rad & Dusty’s adventure begins in the First World, taking them through seven dangerous stages of action-packed, humor-filled, hardcore platforming fun. This decaying jungle world has been infected by a fierce corruption. And it’s up to the unlikely buddy-duo Rad and Dusty to save the jungle’s inhabitants and restore the Elder Tree as guardian of the land.

By: Phantom 8 Studio

Here we have some more high aiming indie work as Phantom 8 Studio bring us Past Cure to the PS4, Xbox One and PC. It’s a more traditional looking 3rd person action adventure with a cinematic story and combat. It really does have some promise, the question is can they deliver the level of polish gamers expect in this kind of title?

If they can it looks like it’s going to be amazing. The plot is all about corruption, revenge and human experimentation. You play as an elite soldier too so chances are you’ll be able to handle yourself in a fight. Keep watching for more on this one gamers, it looks outstanding.

Past Cure Information

February Indie games releases 2018 past cure

PAST CURE tells a riveting revenge story where dreams are indistinguishable from reality, nightmares are self-aware and conspiracy runs deep. You play as Ian, a former elite soldier who lost years of his life to experimentation and torture.

Dive into two seemingly merging worlds to decipher the mystery behind Ian’s telekinetic powers and degenerative mental state before it’s too late.
