Thanks for your continued support for the site everyone, if you want to discuss this article the forum topic can be found here!
Hi, please introduce yourself and what you do at Klei Entertainment
.Hi my name is Corey Rollins and I do all sorts of stuff at Klei Entertainment! We have kind of done away with job titles since our roles often change or evolve over the course of a title. I mostly focus my time on community building and act as the bridge between talking to the people playing our games and getting their ideas heard here at the studio for consideration with our general direction and game design. I also am responsible for setting up and running our conventions like PAX and GDC and special projects like our recent Don’t Starve collectables and our Chester Plush KickStarter!
What first got you into the gaming world as a gamer & now a developer?
.Everyone here got into the game industry for different reasons, but I think it’s fair to say everyone here simply loves games. We loved playing them growing up, and now we enjoy making those experiences for other people. My self working in the position I do, it’s excited as a gamer to know that when people talk to us it’s a two way conversation. We respond and consider feedback and have focused on making it easier to have those discussions with players.
For those who haven’t played this yet, tell us a bit about Don’t Starve
.Don’t Starve is an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic.
You play as Wilson, an intrepid Gentleman Scientist who has been trapped by a demon and transported to a mysterious wilderness world. Wilson must learn to exploit his environment and its inhabitants if he ever hopes to escape and find his way back home.
Players will find themselves in a strange and unexplored world full of odd creatures, dangers, and surprises. Gather resources to craft items and structures that match your survival style.
Each game is completely procedurally generated after each death or when you start a new game. You’re also kind of just thrown into the game, we don’t even tell you the controls. No instructions. No help. No hand holding. You’ll start with nothing and have to craft, hunt, research, farm and fight to survive.
What inspired you to create such a unique and Quirky game? Did it turn out the way you imagined/expected?
.The initial concept was sparked by the first-night experience in Minecraft, although it rapidly diverged from there. Some of the mechanics were informed by Lost in Blue, and I there’s some Dark Souls and Monkey Island in there as well. From there it’s evolved into its own thing and we’re really happy with that.
