Anthem Javelin Details

In Anthem you are going to be a Freelancer, which is a little like a mercenary with a somewhat of a moral compass from what I can see. But whenever you are out in the world, you have to do so in an Exo-Suit called a Javelin.

These are divided into 4 classes, details on those are coming up for you. But all of them allow you to burst around the world, Iron Man style, with incredible speed and freedom of movement.

You are still a big part of the machine, however, and as you play you get stronger as does your Javelin.

As to be expected in a game like this, it’s all about gear! You’ll be constantly on the quest for loot to get better equipment, upgrades and weaponry. Along with unlocking other suits.

Personalisation is big here too. You’ll be able to make everything look the way you want it to. Will there be emotes you say? Of course! You’ll be spending hours breakdancing with friends rather than shooting things in no time.

With that said, let’s have a look at the Javelin classes for the dance off game below…

Anthem Javelin Classes Guide

Here we have all the Javelins and their abilities for you to see which one might be for you. Both a mixture of official information and my take on the Javelin class. Potentially subject to change and tweaks!

Each Javelin has two main weapons in their loadout, melee abilities, an ultimate ability and unique skills.

Each one has their own strengths and weaknesses too, so make sure you have a good think about your playstyle.

Ranger

All Freelancers train on the Ranger first in Anthem. Not because it’s the easiest, but because it’s the most versatile. In the hands of a master lancer, the Ranger can achieve feats of combat prowess that no other javelin can touch.

The Ranger javelin has a deep bag of tricks to draw from, and there is no combat situation it can’t take on effectively. With access to a wide variety of weapon types, the Ranger is a true wild card that can complement any team and any mission.

The Ranger is your “Mr Flexible” in Anthem, it can equip all weapons (but for the Heavy exclusive to Colossus). And it has a balanced approach to attack, movement and defence.

Get friendly with this one the details say “all Freelancer’s start as a Ranger.”

It’s safe to say this will be what you start with in Anthem and you might be in this one for a while before unlocking the others. Even if options open up quickly, having a balanced start makes sense.

Ranger Weapons and Abilities

Weapons Loadout: Any weapons other than Heavy.
Melee: Shock Mace – yep, an electrified mace! That’s me sold.
Ultimate Ability: Multi-Target Missile Battery – again, how it sounds. It fires a tonne of missiles at multiple enemies at once.
Grenade Gear:

  • Frag Grenade: Deals impressive damage in a large area of effect.
  • Inferno Grenade: Ignites an area, dealing damage and setting enemies ablaze.
  • Frost Grenade: Damages and freezes enemies in place.
  • Seeker Grenades: Splits into smaller sub-munitions which seek out the nearest enemy.
  • Sticky Bomb: Attaches to a single target for a contained, high-damage blast.

Assault Launcher Gear:

  • Homing Missile: Fires a projectile that seeks out a target for a small area-of-effect explosion.
  • Energy Pulse: Unleashes a blast of pure energy, hitting a single target with incredible force.
  • Spark Beam: Fires a sustained beam of energy for continuous damage.
  • Venom Darts: Launches a volley of darts that seek out a target for acid damage.
  • Blast Missile: Fires a missile that explodes for area-of-effect damage.

Support Gear:

  • Bulwark Point: Deploys a spherical field which deflects incoming enemy projectiles.
  • Muster Point: Creates a field which increases weapon damage for teammates who enter its radius.

Colossus

Meet Anthem’s Colossus, a hulking war machine designed to clear out entire hives of vicious predatory fauna with mounted artillery, heavy arms, or even, yes, a flamethrower. It’s got reinforced armor plating.

It’s got jet propulsion. It’s got a cannon. If you’re looking to trample through the wilderness in comfort with heavy artillery strapped to your back, the Colossus is for you. feats of combat prowess that no other javelin can touch.

I think I’m going with this one as the “Big Show” of the Anthem Javelins.

This is all about power, force and being in the thick of the action. Taking hits and dishing out the big impact moves. If you love to be in the thick of the action where all things are exloding, this one is for you.

As the only Javelin to be able to use Heavy weapons it has a special quality in battle. And seems particularly good to help get the attention of enemies while more flexible Javelins take advantage of not being the target.

If this one isn’t to your taste, it might be worth finding a friend who does like this one.

Weapons and Abilities

Weapons Loadout: The only Javelin to use Heavy Weapons but can’t use Pistols and SMGs.
Melee: Heavy Smash – Classic burst into the air and smash into the ground move.
Ultimate Ability: Seige Cannon – big cannon to fire in a targeted area.
Ordinance Launcher Gear:

  • High Explosive Mortar: Launches an explosive projectile that deals heavy area-of-effect damage.
  • Burst Mortar: Fires a volley of smaller mortars that spread out to pummel a wider area of effect.
  • Firewall Mortar: Fires a specialized mortar round that ignites a wall of flame, heavily damaging enemies that try to move through it.
  • Lightning Coil: Strikes a single random target with an arc of electricity in front of the Colossus, prioritizing targets with status effects.
  • Shock Coil: Emits waves of electricity out from the Colossus, damaging all nearby enemies.

Heavy Assault Launcher Gear:

  • Heavy Cannon: Fires a large rocket in a targeted direction.
  • Flame Thrower: Unleashes a continuous stream of fire to ignite enemies.
  • Flak Cannon: Barrages nearby enemies with a short-range arc of projectiles.
  • Railgun: Devastates a single-target with a forceful and precise kinetic round.
  • Acid Spitter: Expels an acid projectile to damage enemies.

Support Gear:

  • Taunt: Forces all enemies within a certain radius to divert their attacks to the Colossus.
  • Deflector Pulse: Gives all nearby allies a damage-resistance buff.

Interceptor

The Interceptor javelin might not have the imposing silhouette of the Colossus, but it still knows how to pack a punch.

The Interceptor excels at getting in close to inflict damage and weaken its enemies, then dashing away before they can react.

With powerful blades and a full suite of devastating abilities, the Interceptor is both incredibly self-reliant and an excellent supporting teammate.

Time to move and feel the need for speed with the Interceptor Javelin. This one is on the extreme opposite side of the stats to the Colossus from what it seems.

It’s all about agility, evasion and hitting hard when the opportunity presents itself. While it doesn’t have the big powerful impact that the Colossus seems to, it’s certainly got plenty of cool abilities.

Particularly getting into position to unleash those deadly blades in melee attacks.

Weapons and Abilities

Weapons Loadout: Any weapons other than Heavy.
Melee: Double-Bladed Daggers – a flurry of slashes can be unleashed continuously.
Ultimate Ability: Assassin’s Blades – Supercharged blades that can slice and dice through waves of enemies.
Assault Systems

  • Seeker Glaive: Throws out a razor-sharp projectile that seeks out the nearest target.
  • Acid Bomb: Tosses a grenade which explodes, splashing all nearby enemies with acid.
  • Cryo Glaive: Launches out a projectile that locks on to a nearby target and freezes it on impact.
  • Cluster Mine: Throws out a group of mines onto a targeted area which explode on contact with an enemy.
  • Spark Dash: Dashes forward, leaving behind a trail of electricity that damages enemies.

Strike Systems:

  • Star Strike: Charges an enemy with energy which explodes after a delay. The explosion deals increased damage if the target is destroyed before the full delay.
  • Plasma Star: Tosses a plasma-empowered shuriken at a single target, effective at long range.
  • Nova Strike: Sends out a projection of the Interceptor which will attack enemies it comes in contact with.
  • Tempest Strike: A devastating single-target attack that can stun smaller enemies.
  • Corrosive Spray: Sprays out a jet of corrosive acid that damages all enemies hit.

Support Systems:

  • Target Beacon: Marks a target for increased damage which will switch to another enemy if the marked target is destroyed.
  • Rally Cry: Removes status effects from all nearby allies.
Anthem launch trailer storm image

Storm

The Storm javelin first arrived in Fort Tarsis as a rumor. Developed by the Dominion in their Northern home of Stralheim, the Storm uses a powerful technology known as “seals” to boost the latent kinesis powers of its lancer.

The result is a javelin that can float effortlessly above the ground and unleash the raw energy of the Anthem. Only through painstaking arcanist research has anyone outside the Dominion had a chance to wield the awesome potential of the seal technology.

And while the Storm can channel unbelievable amounts of elemental force, it has little in the way of defensive capabilities and requires an expert pilot to stay above the fight and dish out damage from a safe distance.

There was always going to be one with some kind of magic ability wasn’t there? Enter the Storm, the Technomancer of the group. And personally the one I’m looking forward to playing as most.

From what the details suggest, you might be playing a while before you get this Javelin. It uses in game technology known as “seals” to deliver powerful lightning attacks.

This Javelin sacrifices defence for all that power though. So you’ll really need to know what you are doing to keep out of harm’s way… with my skill level, I think I’ll go back for a second look at the Colossus!

Weapons and Abilities

Weapons Loadout: Any weapons other than Heavy.
Melee: Fiery Strike – An explosive flash blowing back enemies that get too close.
Ultimate Ability: Elemental Storm – a big blast of all elements (fire, electricity and frost) with a big meteor to end it!
Blast Seals:

  • Lightning Strike: A targeted strike that deals lightning damage in an area.
  • Ice Storm: Creates a field of ice that deals damage, rapidly building to a final explosion of frost.
  • Flame Burst: A quick explosion that deals fire damage at a target location.
  • Rime Blast: Fires out a flurry of ice projectiles that deal damage and freeze close-range targets.
  • Living Flame: A burst of flame energy that seeks out and ignites targets.

Focus Seals:

  • Hoarfrost Shards: Rapid-fire shards of ice that slowly freeze a target in place.
  • Fireball: A versatile fire ability that can be fired quickly in small shots or charged for a larger projectile that explodes.
  • Ball Lightning: A discharge of electric energy that can be bounced off of walls to reach targets behind cover.
  • Glacial Beam: Fires a beam of powerful ice energy in a targeted direction.
  • Arc Burst: Unleashes a blast of lightning that will leap to nearby targets for heavy damage.

Support Seals:

  • Wind Wall: Generates a defensive wall of wind that deflects incoming enemy projectiles.
  • Nexus: Creates a field which provides gear cooldown reduction to teammates who enter its radius.

What Anthem Fans Think

After seeing some more of Anthem, we want to know what you think… then Tag who you'd team up with!

Posted by My Games Lounge on Friday, January 18, 2019

Given the big choices here, we took to our highly likable Facebook Page and let Anthem fans vote. We had a great response from fans, most choosing more than one in the comments.

But overall the Storm has people the most exited with gamers almost a third of the votes.

The Ranger was a close second but the Colossus and Interceptor were fairly even. A good sign that all of the classes are looking like they appeal to people interested in the game.

All that’s left is to pick yours and play…

Which Anthem Javelin will you play MOST?

I hope the guide was helpful here guys. Let me know in the comments which one you’ll use as your main Javelin once it all begins.

Personally I’m likely to stick to The Ranger for a while, before tying out the storm and no doubt being blown to bits in it! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
