Yes, this is an article about upcoming remastered games for PS4 and Xbox One. The big divider amongst us gamers. People love them, people hate them but whatever you think there is usually one that triggers that nostalgia feeling.

And over the next few months there are a number of tempting games out there I think could even compete with the new releases.

Here I’m going to cover some remastered games you may find difficult to resist. From shooters to classic RPGs, from masterpieces to iconic Superheroes. Plus, I’m going to get in on the whole remastered games debate. Be prepared though, because these games are very tempting and may eat into your Christmas budget!

But then, Grandma doesn’t really need a Christmas present now does she?

“Stop Wasting Time Making Old Stuff!”

So the elephant in the room, the people reading this snarling about remastered games. “Why are they remaking this? Make me new stuff, NOW!”

Obviously a censored quotation but you get the point. But personally, I’m all for them and here’s a few reasons why.

From a gamer point of view, I’m one of the fussy ones that NEEDS to play things in order. So when I see “Awesome Game 3” coming out and I haven’t played Awesome game 1 or 2 on my old console, my gamer OCD (and for me, GOCD needs to be a recognised condition!) makes me very uncomfortable.

Development wise they’re not usually made by the main team as those working on the new titles either. Most large studios use it as a way of breaking-in the next generation of generation of developers.

Think about it, would you let a fresh out of University person loose on the next big game? Or let them learn from the last big game, upgrading it to something better?

Seems a logical approach to me.

But the big problem I share with the people against remasters in the financial side. Some of them are ridiculously expensive for what is an old game essentially. Especially if the remaster is just a bit of a touch up.

Charging the same price as a new release is an example of exploiting people’s nostalgia. While no one forces you to buy them, they certainly make it hard to resist at times.

But the games here are all excellent gamers! They’re ones that can actually live alongside the big games coming up in the next few weeks and months. Some might even be better, let’s have a look…

The 7 games… That are actually 10 & tonnes of DLC!

Here we go. Like my First Person Shoot Out and All Action October articles, this is in order of release rather than a ranking.

Some trailers and details are mixed in, there’s a link to the official site on the title for more info. Oh, and no annoying clicking between pages here people! Click on the headings to visit the official game site too if you like.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered – Out Now (pre-order only) or November 4th

Remastered Games For PS4 and Xbox One cod mwf rmWhat a way to start the list gamers! A classic game, one that has the love of a generation of Call of Duty gamers is back and people can play it… today! This game redefined the Call of Duty series, and whether you like the more modern settings or not, this is one top game that people who never played it should do so. But even if you did, this is going to be a hard game to resist if you are a COD fan.

Duke Nukem 3D Anniversary – Out Now

Remastered Games For PS4 and Xbox One duke nukem 3dThis was an out of the blue announcement as Duke comes back in all his pixelated, foul mouthed glory. The trailer, you can see below, dropped the bomb that we are going to be playing as the action hero of the 90s in Duke Nukem 3D as they re-release the game as a 20th Anniversary World tour.

Not only are you going to get the original game with all of the moments in the original, with a touch up on the engine, soundtrack and more. There is a whole new episode to play as the original team bring a new area to play into the mix.

This is a true celebration of a classic game and one that younger gamers may have missed. Old (fart) gamers like me are all about playing this again but there is something about playing a game to see where the origins of modern shooters began that may appeal to the young ones.

Remastered Games For PS4 and Xbox One RocksmithA game that teaches you something? Surely not! I mean it’s not like games are positive and increase hand eye coordination, problem solving or reduce stress or anything.

This one does all that and teaches you to play the guitar too!

Rocksmith has been remastered and comes to the next generation consoles this month. So if you ever wanted to learn the guitar and play a game at once this is for you.

Batman Return to Arkham – 21 October

October Game Releases BatmanI did cover this game in the All Action October article focusing on action games coming this month, plus all other releases in a list for you all too. But as far as focusing on remasters goes, this is up there with the best we are going to see.

And not just this year.

The original Arkham games were excellent. The voice acting of The Joker (Mark Hamill) and Batman (Kevin Conroy) was sublime and really made you feel you were playing a true Batman game, rather than some tie-in. The Scarecrow moments in the original Arkham Asylum were really well done too as was the gameplay and story.

Arkham City, for me, was the best sandbox action-game of the year when it originally released. Whether you think that is the peak of the series or Arkham Knight just beat it, it’s still an amazing game.

This one gets my vote as an essential buy if you missed the originals or if you didn’t get all those Riddler trophies first time. Check out the reveal trailer and details.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is where it all began. Originally developed by Rocksteady Studios and released in 2009, the game pushed the envelope for action, adventure and super hero games and exposed players to a unique, dark and atmospheric adventure taking them to the depths of Arkham Asylum.  Featuring an original story, gamers can move in the shadows, instill fear amongst their enemies and confront The Joker and Gotham City’s most notorious villains, including Harley Quinn, Bane, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy and Scarecrow, who have taken over the asylum.

Batman: Arkham City is Rocksteady Studios’ 2011 follow-up to Batman: Arkham Asylum. The game builds upon the intense, atmospheric foundation of Batman: Arkham Asylum, sending players soaring through the expansive Arkham City – the maximum security “home” for all of Gotham City’s thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds. Featuring an incredible Rogues Gallery of Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals including Catwoman, The Joker, The Riddler, Two-Face, Harley Quinn, The Penguin, Mr. Freeze and many others, the game allows players to experience what it feels like to be The Dark Knight and deliver justice to those confined within Arkham City.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition – 25 October

October Game Releases DarksidersThis is an awesome game to remaster, the best of the two Darksiders games for me. War was wronged and all of humanity was destroyed in the breaking of the 7th seal. The Apocalypse happened and it was all pinned on War’s error.

Not X-Men Apocalypse, that wasn’t his fault…  20th Century FOX take the blame for that one.

But back to the game, it’s a wonderful example of classic adventure mechanics mixed with combat mechanics and power upgrades. Only in games like this will you get stuck behind a giant door, go off to one side; fight through waves of enemies and solve puzzles; kick a boss’s ass and… back to the blocked door… you’ve opened one lock.

Go the other side and repeat!

It’s classic and wonderfully done. My only concern personally is the potentially dated controls and movement but let’s hope that’s been tweaked in remaster. Let’s also hope this is a hint that the next Darksiders game is on the way very soon! Details below:

About Darksiders Warmastered Edition

Deceived by the forces of evil into prematurely bringing about the end of the world, War – the first Horseman of the Apocalypse – stands accused of breaking the sacred law by inciting a war between Heaven and Hell. In the slaughter that ensued, the demonic forces defeated the heavenly hosts and laid claim to the Earth.

Brought before the sacred Charred Council, War is indicted for his crimes and stripped of his powers. Dishonored and facing his own death, War is given the opportunity to return to Earth to search for the truth and punish those responsible.

Hunted by a vengeful group of Angels, War must take on the forces of Hell, forge uneasy alliances with the very demons he hunts, and journey across the ravaged remains of the Earth on his quest for vengeance and vindication.

  • Apocalyptic Power – Unleash the wrath of War, combining brutal attacks and supernatural abilities to decimate all who stand in your way
  • Extreme Arsenal – Wield a devastating arsenal of angelic, demonic and Earthlyweapons; and blaze a trail of destruction atop Ruin, War’s fiery phantom steed
  • Epic Quest – Battle across the wastelands and demon-infested dungeons of the decimated Earth in your quest for vengeance and redemption
  • Character Progression – Uncover powerful ancient relics, upgrade your weapons, unlock new abilities, and customize your gameplay style
  • Battle Heaven and Hell – Battle against all who stand in your way – from war-weary angelic forces to Hell’s hideous demon hordes

The Elder Scrolls Skyrim – 28 October

Remastered Games For PS4 and Xbox One Skyrim Special EditionThe king of 2016 remastered games, no question. I mean Skyrim is likely to challenge new titles for game of the year it’s so good, especially with a 1080p output and all the DLC packs included.

Don’t mention Mods to Sony tho! They have finally taken their fingers out of their ears about it all. “Lalala, can’t hear you!” was the answer for a while, but we got there in the end.

Mods or no mods, this is a monster of a remaster. And for those who played it on the PS3 and Xbox 360 they know the pain we experienced after playing too long.

Frame rate down to 2 per second on a good day in Solitude and dancing dragon bones plus lots of lost saves. It was literally the very limit of what the consoles could deliver. We still loved it though and with the new consoles capabilities, we’ll experience Skyrim on consoles the way it was meant to be.

I can’t wait; many of you will be the same with this one. The trailer with that awesome soundtrack and some details are below. Get that volume up on the soundtrack!

Winner of more than 200 Game of the Year Awards, Skyrim Special Edition brings the epic fantasy to life in stunning detail. The Special Edition includes the critically acclaimed game and add-ons with all-new features like remastered art and effects, volumetric god rays, dynamic depth of field, screen-space reflections, and more.

Skyrim Special Edition also brings the full power of mods to the PC and Xbox One.  New quests, environments, characters, dialogue, armour, weapons and more – with Mods, there are no limits to what you can experience.

Assassin’s Creed Ezio Collection – 15 November

Remastered Games For PS4 and Xbox One Ezio CollectionLast on the list and the biggest collection of games yet. A trilogy in fact as you live the life, once again, of arguably the best Assassin of the series, Ezio!

While both AC Syndicate and Black Flag really stand out as recent, great AC games. None have hit the perfect balance that was found in Ezio’s story. He’s a great character and the story is so well done, it’s certainly worth experiencing if you missed it.
