The latest Call of Duty is releasing on November 3 gamers and we are getting excited for it now. Sledgehammer Games are behind this one and it’s a return to classic warfare for a series that has take some heat for its futuristic setting. But was are back in the classic war settings and I’m here to bring you the Call of Duty WW2 features, videos and everything you need to know ahead of Activision’s big release.
On this single page (yes, no annoying next buttons or anything) we have some of the stand out features of the game. This includes official details, videos, images and my thoughts too. I’ve been looking forward to this for a while now following last year’s entry.
I have to confess, I was a fan of Infinite Warfare(my review). I thought the campaign was excellent and I hope this one delivers more of that great storytelling in a more classic setting.
Also, get over to our very Likable MGL Facebook page for more COD WW2! We are taking reactions from you gamers on Facebook so get over there and vote. Plus I want your comments and thoughts so, soldier… can you answer this?
What types of FPS games do you think are the best, classic war from history? Modern Day Conflict? Or Futuristic Wars?
Let me know in the Disqus Comments at the end of the article gamers. It’s a much debated on and I look forward to reading your thoughts.
8. The Setting
Having posed that question I’m starting with the World War 2 setting. Make no mistake, this is a reaction to fan demand and they really are taking the game back to it’s roots. The game my be annual but the three main studios release a game every 3 years. Sledgehammer have been planning since Advanced Warfare feedback and really have put some work into this setting.
Personally speaking I don’t have a preference about past, present or future if the game is good. And the futuristic shooters have been good games in years gone by. However, classic shooters have a warm place in my heart from back in the days Medal of Honour was the main shooter franchise out there.
Many younger gamers won’t remember that either. Going back to this setting brings so many gameplay and story options, plus a nice amount of grit to the war setting. World War 2 is so significant in history in many dark ways. This is not going to be a glossy, sci-fi meets fantasy game. It’s going to be hard, dirty and should really be quite emotional if they tell the story of these soldiers right.
Some official details are below.
Call of Duty: WWII brings to life some of the most iconic moments of World War II, including the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Bulge, with incredible visuals and awe-inspiring sound that puts players in the middle of the action.
In Call of Duty: WWII, players will battle across Europe through strategic locations in history’s most monumental war. Experience iconic Call of Duty combat, the bonds of camaraderie, and the brutality of war against a global power throwing the world into tyranny.
7. A Cinematic, Authentic Campaign
One thing that will really show of the nature of this WWII setting is the main campaign. Some players will of course head for the multiplayer right away, some may never leave it. But from what I have seen so far the single player campaign looks like there has been a lot of care and attention spent on it.
There has been some serious amount of research put into this years COD to make it feel like you are in this awful war. There is also a big focus on getting the european locations accurate and really true to the time and the place. Not to mention the equipment and the soldiers themselves.
“Ordinary people doing extraordinary things” is quote from the video below about the game but sounds more like superhero territory alone. But this actually what happened, and the campaign promises to be a tale of real people, like us now who play games (and eat too many carbs while we do so) going out there and fighting a big war.
Let’s hope it delivers, some official information is under the video below.
Call of Duty: WWII tells the story of heroism on a global scale, through the unbreakable brotherhood of common men fighting to preserve freedom in a world on the brink of tyranny. Players enlist in a gritty, intense campaign through the harrowing battlegrounds of war, facing overwhelming odds and hostile terrain across Europe, in a gripping experience that honors the history of World War II.
Call of Duty: WWII features the epic scale, cinematic moments and intensity that only Call of Duty delivers, all set against the backdrop of the largest global conflict in history. The game redefines World War II for a new generation, delivering an experience that was not possible on previous systems.
6. A Classic War Story
You are going to be taking on the story as a member of the infantry, your character is Ronald Daniels, called “Red” but not the Shawshank one…
The story is said to honour the stories of the people that fought in the war as you take on conflict across the “European Theatre of War”. You’ll be fighting on the infamous beaches of Normandy and into germany. Camaraderie plays a huge part in this too, all people had in the war were there fellow soldiers so you will have some interesting characters to care about during the story.
No doubt leading to some serious emotional moments that will have me telling the other half I have something in my eye again!
Featuring a global cast of characters across Europe, players will follow the gripping story of Ronald “Red” Daniels, a member of the US 1st Infantry Division, as they trek through the harrowing European theater of war.
Joining Allied forces from the U.K. and the French Resistance, across the beaches of Normandy, to the liberation of Paris and ultimately into Germany, the squad must fight alongside a global and diverse cast of characters to achieve victory.
The story campaign delivers the gritty authenticity and cinematic intensity of WWII combat, honoring the unforgettable heroism of those who fought in World War II.
5. Boots-on-the-ground Multiplayer
As someone who is terrible at multiplayer, taking out the madness that is wall-running and crazy exo-suits can only be a good thing. But it is the foundations of war games that it feels like intense, boots on the ground combat.
Thankfully we are returning to that this time.
We are getting a number of different modes here too. War is a new one that gets you fighting (6-on-6) in story driven war conflicts which seem the big one for Call of Duty this time. Plus we have Headquarters which is like a social area where you can take part in war games for training.
It sounds a bit strange but it actually looks pretty cool in the trailer below, plus there is some info below that. Imagine the Destiny social area but with lots of competitions going on and things exploding a lot!
Call of Duty®: WWII Multiplayer marks an exciting return to the franchise’s World War II roots and combat that defined the franchise. Prepare for fast-paced, grounded action with an arsenal of iconic weapons and equipment in the fight to liberate a continent in the throes of tyranny. Call of Duty: WWII immerses players in the brutal gameplay of history’s largest conflict.
Call of Duty: WWII Multiplayer offers players true franchise innovations across the entire experience with brand new ways to connect, compete and engage as a community. Divisions redefines how players develop their WWII Multiplayer Careers by enlisting in five iconic WWII-era divisions. War Mode lets players compete against each other in team-driven, objective gameplay. And Headquarters is a transformational new experience that will connect players like never before.
- WAR MODE
War Mode is an all-new game mode where players must work as a team to defeat the enemy. This narrative-driven Multiplayer experience, developed in partnership with Raven Software, immerses players in iconic World War II locations. Allied and Axis forces clash in team-driven assault and defend missions for key strategic objectives.
Headquarters is an all new off-the-frontlines experience for Call of Duty players. Players will compete, earn rewards, show off their accomplishments, and connect with fans and friends. Unlike anything experienced in Call of Duty to date, Headquarters transforms the Multiplayer experience by redefining how players engage with the game and with each other.
4. Multiplayer Classes
Of course we have to split the skills up for the multiplayer modes in Call of Duty WW2, this time we are having “Divisions”.
Parachute your way into the fight as the “Airborne Division” as you move quietly and strike with your silenced weapons. Or keep your distance and snipe with the “Mountain Division” if you don’t like getting too close.
If you get shot a lot (like me!) then there is the “Armoured Division” that packs some big weapons and big armour… I’m guessing a tank might turn faster than this class however. Then there is the “Expeditionary Division” that bring the fire to the party!
Lastly there is the classic Infantry Division that gives you a nice flexibility. I’ve got the full lowdown for you bellow.
Divisions fundamentally redefines how players invest in their Multiplayer career. This is a reimagining of the create-a-class system, and players will choose from five iconic World War II divisions each with specific division training and division weapon skills. This streamlined approach to Multiplayer gives players the ability to reinforce their individual play styles while dominating the enemy in some of the most iconic locations of the world’s largest conflict.
- Airborne Division: The first to the fight, the Airborne Division moves fast and stays quiet, armed with undetectable silenced SMGs
- Mountain Division: Death from a distance, the Mountain Division, with their sharpshooter focus and sniper rifles, is precise and deadly
- Infantry Division: Extremely versatile, the Infantry Division is equipped for mid to long range rifle engagements and up-close-and-personal bayonet charges
- Armored Division: Bringing the heaviest firepower, the Armored Division is armed to the teeth with explosives and LMG firepower
- Expeditionary Division: Packing heat, the Expeditionary Division is well-equipped with incendiary rounds and shotguns
3. The Maps
To take part in this epic multiplayer war we need some cool maps. This time they are taking real world inspiration and are coming with the same authentic feel as the main campaign.
At launch there are 10 main multiplayer maps plus 3 for War mode to enjoy. Some have been revealed with some information about them which I have below for you along with a video.
Is this enough? Well, it’s all down to how fun they are to play and how long they can be enjoyed for before they really need to add more. COD is all about the add-on packs so this is just about enough to get by for now, but still make you think about that season pass!
The locations though, especially the War mode ones are pretty special in their design and really capture that intensity of battle in this time period.
Point Du Hoc
Fight through a fortified network of German bunker complexes atop the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc, an important strategic target overlooking the beaches of Normandy. Engage in fast-paced, close-quarters combat in the trenches, or flank the enemy in a brutal fight to lock down the nearby farmhouse and bunkers for control of key access routes to the bluff.
Battle through the frigid snow-covered forest of the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge, the brutal final major offensive effort by the German army to punch through the Allied front lines. Engagements are fast and deadly in the dangerous, snow-covered woodland ruins. Stay alert in this medium size, frenetic map protected by emplaced MG42 machine guns waiting to annihilate enemy combatants.
Operation Breakout (War Mode)
Fight for control of a war-torn French village west of St. Lo, an important operation in the Allied push onward and out of the beachhead at Normandy. Allied and Axis forces clash for control of a strategic manor to secure a forward operating position. Bridge construction, ammo depot demolition and tank escorts are key strategic tasks in this do or die mission to dominate the enemy. Choose your equipment wisely – every decision can mean the difference between victory and defeat in this narrative-driven, objective-based multiplayer experience – a first for Call of Duty.
Plus the following:
- Flak Tower
- Gustav Cannon
- London Docks
- USS Texas
- Carentan – Season pass required
War Mode only
- Operation Griffin
- Operation Neptune
2. Great cast and interesting characters.
We do like to take a look at some good voice actors here at MGL. It’s part of what really drives the game on for us, hence our regular Voice Artist Spotlight feature (one coming up for COD shortly).
To really convey this amazing storyline and capture that feeling of living and dying together in the most awful of situations, you need great characters played by great actors.
We have the likes of Ving Rhames, Josh Duhamel and COD series favourite Jeffrey Pierce joining the cast with their acting skills. They are going to be part of the roster of soldiers involved in this tale that has some interesting characters too.
See some more about them below.
1. Nazi Zombies
Do I really need to say anything? I mean, everyone likes to shoot zombies and everyone loves to shoot up some Nazi’s. And let’s not get all political about this either, we don’t need any #ZombieLivesMatter Tweets going around!
This mode looks damn awesome and pretty intense too. I can’t wait to give this one a try for myself!
Check out the video below and some of the details about it. Don’t forget to hit me up in the comments with some of your hopes on the game and if you like the historic war setting.
Call of Duty: WWII Nazi Zombies is an original, terrifying co-operative mode that unleashes a frightening new horror story for Call of Duty zombies fans. Nothing is as it seems in this zombies horror, as a dark and sinister plot unfolds to unleash an invincible army of the dead.
Players will embark on a chilling, dark and mysterious journey through Mittelburg, a snowy Bavarian village in Germany, as they attempt to recover priceless works of art stolen by the Axis powers in World War II. This village holds a secret key to an unimaginable and monstrous power, so visitors must be on their toes and beware of the twisted and occult horrors that guard these treasures.
